Abstract

This study empirically examines the impact of energy price shocks on the performance of the manufacturing industry in the Turkish economy for the 2002–2024 period, evaluating the findings through an economic security perspective. The indispensable role of energy in production creates a strategic vulnerability for import-dependent countries like Türkiye, where global price fluctuations and exchange rate pass-through evolve into serious security issues. Distinguishing itself from existing literature, this research incorporates the concept of 'exchange rate amplification' regarding energy prices and provides an original contribution by defining energy dependence as an 'economic security object'. Industrial production, oil prices, real exchange rates, and energy import values were analyzed using the ARDL bounds testing and ARDL-ECM methods. This approach, developed by Pesaran et al. (2001), provides short- and long-term dynamics simultaneously, regardless of the variables' integration levels. The impact of structural breaks in 2008 and 2018 was monitored via CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests; empirical results confirm that energy price increases exert a significant, negative, and persistent effect on production. In accordance with Securitization Theory (Wæver, 1995), energy prices are viewed as a critical threat to industrial production, the 'reference object' to be protected. Within this framework, the ARDL model serves as an analytical tool to measure the response of the economic security architecture to external shocks. The exacerbation of price shocks by exchange rate volatility necessitates managing the process from an economic security standpoint. Due to the log-log specification, the estimated coefficients are directly interpretable as 'elasticity' values. The study concludes by proposing a four-pillar model consisting of financial, operational, structural, and geopolitical components. Reducing energy intensity, increasing the share of domestic resources, and strengthening operational resilience against energy costs are of vital importance for Türkiye to maintain global competitiveness and enhance economic security.
