Abstract

Many prejudice reduction intervention strategies (direct contact, dialogue, etc.) have been developed and tested for a long time to address the social problems caused by prejudice. In recent years, sports has been proposed as an alternative strategy to reduce prejudice. As a result of growing interest around the world in the use of sport as a prejudice reduction tool, numerous sports-based intervention programs have been implemented. However, intervention studies evaluating the effectiveness of these programs are limited, especially in Turkey. To comprehend the factors that contribute the success in sports-based interventions, it is important to consider the findings of existing intervention studies. In addition, while the international literature on the prejudice reduction potential of sports is comprehensive, discussions on this subject in the Turkish literature are very limited. Accordingly, this study aims (a) to present the discussions on the potential of sports for improving intergroup relations and (b) to review the findings of sports-based intervention studies for reducing prejudice. It is thought that this study could contribute to the Turkish literature. In this study, firstly, the sports for development and peace approach is introduced. Afterwards, discussions in the literature on the role of sports in improving intergroup relations are included. Then, the findings of sport-based intervention programs carried out to improve intergroup relations in the world and in Turkey were reviewed and discussed.
