Abstract
This study aims to analyze urban development processes based on the oil industry within the framework of the "company town" concept through a comparative perspective of Abadan (Iran) and Batman (Turkey). The study questions how urban space is constructed by production processes and political ideologies, and the impact of these processes on social stratification. In the research, urban transformation processes were examined using the comparative historical analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods. Accompanied by institutional archives, planning decisions, and literature review, the construction of urban space was subjected to a theoretical reading on the axis of modernization and dependency theories. Space is recognized not merely as a physical structure but as a political ground where power relations are crystallized. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that both cities were designed as "social engineering" projects focused on rational planning and discipline. In these settlements, which took shape as a spatial manifestation of economic production, it was observed that institutional authority took full control of the physical environment. It was identified that the political context directly determined the urban organization, and that colonial and national developmentalist policies produced different spatial outcomes. It was observed that hierarchy and class segregation in space were constructed at every point, from residential areas to social facilities. It was determined that the state or the institutional structure triggered social transformation by using industrialization as an urban showcase. Consequently, it has been revealed that urban space is a political product in which relations of exploitation and inequality within the scope of dependency theory, or national ideals on the basis of modernization theory, are embodied.
