Abstract
The fact that the divine address was conveyed through a language used by people in communication renders the rules and modes of usage of that language decisive for understanding the address. Arabic holds particular importance in the Islamic sciences as it is the language of the Qur’ān and the Prophet Muhammad. In the formation of usūl thought, which deals with the methods and sources for understanding the divine address, the Arabic language likewise occupies a central position. For this reason, ā al-fiqh developed in close interaction with the Arabic language from its very inception, and issues such as the indication (dalāla), designation (wad‘), and scope of expressions have stood at the center of usūl debates. This study aims to examine the central position of the Arabic language in usūl al-fiqh thought arising from the fact that the divine address was conveyed through Arabic within the context of the usūl works of Abū Ishāq al-Shīrāzī (d. 476/1083), one of the Shāfi‘ī usūl scholars. As demonstrated in the study, al-Shīrāzī employs the Arabic language as a decisive criterion of preference and grounds his views in the usage and custom of the language community as well as in the classifications of linguists. According to him, the linguists’ classification of speech into command, prohibition, report, and interrogative, together with the continuous and consistent use of expressions in particular meanings within Arabic usage, constitutes evidence at the level of mustafīd transmission that these expressions were designated for those meanings. The study examines, through a document analysis based method, al-Shīrāzī’s pronounced references to the Arabic language in his usūl works in a comparative and detailed manner alongside the texts of Ash‘arī mutakallim usūl scholars. The main research question is whether the disagreement between al-Shīrāzī and the mutakallim usūl scholars stems from accepting or rejecting the decisive role of the Arabic language in usūl thought, or rather from a methodological difference regarding how knowledge about the Arabic language is to be established. To this end, contentious issues related to expressions are addressed, such as the distinction between proof (dalīl) and indicator (amāra), the origin of names, the designation of amr (command), nahy (prohibition), ‘umûm (generality), and khabar (report) formulas, the ruling and repetition implication of absolute commands and prohibitions, and whether a temporal interval may intervene between the excepted element and that from which it is excepted in exception (istisnā’).
Özet
İlâhî hitâbın insanların iletişim halinde oldukları bir dil aracılığıyla gelmiş olması, bu dilin kurallarını ve kullanım biçimlerini hitâbın anlaşılmasında belirleyici kılmaktadır. Arapça, Kur’ân’ın ve Hz. Peygamber’in dili olması sebebiyle İslâmî ilimlerde önem arz etmektedir.
