Abstract

Between 1839 and 1842, three wars took place in Afghanistan between the British Empire, known as the empire on which the sun never set, and the Pashtun Durrani Empire. During this period, the British Empire sought to seize Afghanistan in order to squeeze the Russian Empire from the south. The local and national Durrani State, which ruled Afghanistan at the time, fought three wars with the British Empire to prevent British domination. In this context, it succeeded in stopping the British Empire at the Durand Line, i.e., on Pakistani territory. However, this led to the division of the Pashtun population in the region between Afghanistan and the British Empire's territory in Pakistan, which is still seen as a problem in the international relations system today. In 1923, Emanullah Khan, the founder of the Afghan State, ascended the throne. Emanullah Khan wanted to strengthen the Afghan State through reforms and revolutions. His first and most important revolution was to abolish Sharia law and prepare a modern constitution. However, he was deposed by an uprising supported by foreign powers. The uprising and dethronement of reformist Emanullah Khan, an admirer of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, between 1928 and 1929 is an important period that can be considered the beginning of the Taliban rule that the State of Afghanistan is currently experiencing.
