Abstract

Realism is one of the most influential theoretical approaches in international relations, explaining state behavior through the concepts of power, security, and national interest. According to realist theory, states engage in continuous power struggles within an anarchic international system to ensure their survival and security. Today, these struggles are conducted not only through military and economic capabilities but also through media and communication technologies. Media has become a strategic instrument that enables states to legitimize national interests, influence public opinion, and shape international perceptions. This study examines the relationship between realism and media through the perspectives of classical and neo-realist theories. Using a qualitative document analysis method, the study evaluates the core assumptions of realism and analyzes historical and contemporary cases, including the Cold War, the 2003 Iraq War, and digital information warfare in the age of social media. The findings demonstrate that media is not merely a tool reflecting international power politics but also an influential factor shaping and transforming those dynamics. Consequently, media should be considered an integral component of state power projection and strategic competition in the contemporary international system.
