Abstract

Liberalism is one of the most established and influential theoretical approaches in the discipline of international relations, offering a comprehensive perspective that explains interstate relations beyond the confines of power politics and conflict. By placing individuals, international institutions, law, economic interaction, and interdependence at the center of its analysis, the liberal approach argues that cooperation and peace can be sustained under certain conditions within the international system. This study aims to examine the philosophical and historical foundations of liberalism, evaluate its theoretical transformation from classical liberalism to neoliberal institutionalism, and critically analyze its explanatory capacity in contemporary international politics. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on document analysis. Accordingly, the major theoretical works on liberalism and the leading academic studies in the field were examined through a comparative analysis. The findings indicate that liberalism provides a robust theoretical framework for explaining international cooperation through concepts such as democratic peace, international organizations, and interdependence. However, the resurgence of power politics, the increase in regional conflicts, and the deepening of global crises have generated renewed debates regarding the explanatory capacity of the liberal approach. Consequently, the study concludes that liberalism remains one of the principal theoretical perspectives in international relations and continues to provide a valuable analytical framework for understanding contemporary global politics owing to its ability to adapt to changing international dynamics.
