Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the occupational health and safety (OHS) approaches and awareness levels of candidates who will work in the forestry sector, which is defined as high risk in terms of working conditions. The population of the study consisted of students enrolled in Forestry and Forest Products programmes at three different universities (Bartın, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart, and Muğla Sıtkı Koçman) located in different regions of Turkey. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and the SPSS 21 programme was used for data entry and analysis. In addition to descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and chi-square tests were used and interpreted in the study. It was found that students with work experience had higher occupational health and safety awareness and knowledge scores than those without experience (p<0.001). Most students considered occupational health and safety training to be necessary (%89.6), and it was determined that work experience and expert support played a critical role in translating theoretical awareness into practical safe behaviour. It was understood that support training on occupational health and safety is important for developing the safe behaviours of students receiving forestry education.
