Abstract

The Trinity and the Incarnation rank among the most difficult-to-explain and theologically dense doctrines in Christian history. Although the Councils of Nicaea (325), Constantinople (381), and Chalcedon (451) provided a dogmatic framework for these teachings, the question of how to relate these doctrines to salvation and human transformation has remained a subject of debate. For this reason, early Christian theologians turned to interpretive frameworks capable of reconciling the conceptual complexity of the doctrine with religious life. Deification (Theosis) served as one such framework, offering a functional linguistic means to explain how salvation is achieved. While acknowledging that theosis emerged as a technical term in subsequent centuries, this study examines how the pre-terminological discourse of theosis was constructed within the Alexandrian tradition through the works of Clement, Origen, and Athanasius, and what theological functions it served. The central problem of the research is how this discourse is grounded in scriptural sources and how it relates to salvation, incarnation, and Christology in Alexandrian theology. Within this framework, the study aims to bring to light the Alexandrian influence—often treated as a secondary issue in the literature—and to demonstrate how theosis functions as a theological logic within doctrinal debates. For Alexandrian Christians, theosis is a fundamental orientation at the center of the doctrine of salvation, understood not as a theoretical concept but as a practical and vital process. In this context, Clement of Alexandria evaluated the process of theosis as a transformation progressing through knowledge (gnosis) and virtue, conceiving the soul’s orientation toward God in conjunction with moral perfection and becoming like God. Building on this line of thought pioneered by Clement, Origen incorporated the language of “participation” (methexis) into theology in a more systematic manner and grounded deification as a dynamic process. According to him, deification is not a physical union of God with human nature, but rather an orientation toward divinity through participation. The idea that the Logos shares in the Father’s divinity and communicates this share to others held a central place in Origen’s understanding of theosis. Athanasios, on the other hand, highlighted theosis particularly in the context of his struggle against Arius, presenting it as an argument to establish the divinity of the Son. The statement, “God became human so that humans might become divine,” captures the essence of this understanding. While these thinkers approached theosis as a process of union with God, the spiritual, mystical, and moral dimensions of the doctrine were also emphasized. In this study, texts by the influential and authoritative Alexandrian Church Fathers were taken as the basis, and references to the Old and New Testaments were evaluated within their respective contexts. Since the connection of the doctrine of theosis with sacred texts constituted a significant area of debate in early Christian thought, the study examines how references in the Old Testament—which primarily provide an indirect framework—and expressions in the New Testament—which are seen as more direct foundations—were interpreted within the Alexandrian tradition. Additionally, the study discusses the boundaries within which these references can be utilized. It takes into account that such lines of reasoning also underlie the well-known influence of the Alexandrian tradition on the decisions regarding the Trinity and Christology at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople. Methodologically, patristic literature and contemporary research were evaluated together, and a historical-analytical reading was conducted. The study’s primary conclusion is that Alexandria’s discourse on deification produced a concept of participation supported by readings of the sacred texts, and that this concept became central to the doctrine of salvation. In this regard, the Alexandrian tradition laid a conceptual and theological foundation for the doctrine of theosis, which would later become central in Eastern Christianity.
