Abstract

“Deification” is a practice in which historical figures, rulers or emperors, are elevated to a divine or semi-divine status. This practice was especially common in civilizations such as Ancient Rome and Egypt and involved religious respect and worship of these figures. Today, the term “deification” is sometimes used figuratively to mean that a person has been exalted to excess. In the Alexandria Christian School, which is the subject of our study, deification was expressed with the terms “divinization”, “deification” or “theosis”. In this context, deification is considered in the sense that man has been elevated to the level of God or has participated in the divine life. The essence of this concept lies in the belief that human nature must be elevated to divine nature through Jesus Christ and thus renewed. This idea is based on the idea that human nature has deteriorated over time and needs transformation. In Christianity, this teaching has been accepted as a theological approach that emphasizes the importance of believers living a holy life. Deification, as both a historical and religious concept, has had an important place in the beliefs and practices of people and societies. In this study, we will comprehensively discuss the Alexandrian School’s understanding of deification, the origins of this understanding, its theological foundations and its effects on Christian theology. We will also focus on the ways in which deification has been interpreted within Christianity, its role in theological debates, and its long-term effects on the Christian faith. This evaluation is important to understand the historical development of the concept of deification on Christian thought and practices and to reveal the echoes of this concept today.
