Abstract

Dreamvertising refers to one of the newest and most controversial areas of advertising, aiming to deliver brand messages through dreams by accessing the consumer’s subconscious processes. This study examines how dream advertising is positioned within marketing communication and its potential effects on consumer perception and behavior. The main focus of the research is the strategies by which brands transform the dream process into an advertising medium. The purpose of the study is to analyze the methods, ethical dimensions, and applications of dreamvertising through three representative casesThe research adopts a qualitative comparative multiple-case study design and examines Burger King’s “Nightmare King,” Coors’ “Big Game Dream,” and Xbox’s “Made from Dreams” campaigns through document analysis. The findings indicate that Burger King employed dreams and nightmares as creative themes without documented intervention during sleep. The Coors campaign used a protocol inspired by targeted dream incubation to attempt to influence dream content; however, the available effectiveness claims rely primarily on brand-generated and campaign-related materials rather than independent verification. In the Xbox case, participant-reported dream narratives and sleep-related measurements were transformed into creative content rather than being used to insert advertising messages into dreams. These diverse approaches demonstrate that dreamvertising is not merely a subconscious influence mechanism but also a communicative practice that redefines the brand experience. In conclusion, the study reveals that dreamvertising goes beyond subliminal advertising, embodying a complex phenomenon with technological, psychological, and ethical dimensions.

Özet

Rüya Reklamcılığı (Dreamvertising), tüketicinin bilinçdışı süreçlerine erişerek marka mesajlarını rüya aracılığıyla iletmeyi amaçlayan, reklamcılığın en yeni ve tartışmalı alanlarından biridir. Bu çalışma, rüya reklamcılığının pazarlama iletişimi bağlamında nasıl konumlandığını ve tüketici üzerindeki potansiyel etkilerini incelemektedir. Araştırmanın temel konusu, markaların rüya süreçlerini bir reklam mecrasına dönüştürme stratejileridir. Çalışmanın amacı, rüya reklamcılığının yöntemlerini, etik boyutlarını ve uygulama biçimlerini üç farklı vaka üzerinden analiz etmektir. Araştırma, nitel karşılaştırmalı çoklu vaka çalışması olarak tasarlanmış; Burger King’in “Nightmare King”, Coors’un “Big Game Dream” ve Xbox’ın “Made from Dreams” kampanyaları doküman analizi yoluyla incelenmiştir.
