Abstract

This study examines the processes of precarization to which freelance journalists are exposed in the digital age, along with the strategies they employ to cope with this precarity. Within a neoliberal governmentality in which risk permeates all aspects of the social sphere, the precarization of journalists is analyzed through Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, which seeks to balance the relationship between structure and agency. In this context, the transformation of journalistic habitus through digitalization constitutes a distinctive contribution of the study. The research is based on survey data collected from 32 freelance journalists residing in different cities across Türkiye, reached through snowball sampling. The findings indicate that freelance journalists face multidimensional economic challenges, including low and irregular income, payment insecurity, lack of social protection, and weak unionization. In addition, work-life imbalance, psychological strain, the loss of visibility experienced on digital platforms, and online pressures emerge as significant risks. The study demonstrates that these challenges are deepened by the processes of neoliberal transformation and digitalization.

Özet

Bu çalışma, dijital çağda serbest gazetecilerin maruz kaldığı güvencesizleşme süreçlerini ve bu bireylerin söz konusu güvencesizlikle baş etme stratejilerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Riskin toplumsal alanın her veçhesine nüfuz ettiği neoliberal yönetimsellikte gazetecilerin prekarlaşma süreçleri, yapı-fail ilişkisini dengede incelemeyi amaç edinen Pierre Bourdieu'nun teorik çerçevesi göz önünde bulundurularak incelenmiştir.
