Abstract
Rapidly increasing urbanization, decreasing natural surface cover and the proliferation of impermeable surfaces cause the urban heat island (UHI) effect to become more pronounced in urban centers. In this study, the temporal and spatial variations of Land Surface Temperature (LST) and vegetation density were analyzed using Landsat 8 satellite data from 2014, 2019 and 2024 in Sivas province. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to determine vegetation density and multi-temporal thermal bands were used to calculate temperatures. The findings reveal that in 2014, sparse vegetation was dominant and the temperature range of 35-40 °C was observed over large areas. In 2019, with the increase in impervious surfaces, areas in the 40-45 °C temperature band more than doubled, indicating that the UHI effect reached its peak. By 2024, the average temperature decreases from 34.05 °C to 27.45 °C, thanks to the increase in medium and dense vegetation cover, and the areas of extreme temperature shrink. The results confirm the inverse relationship between NDVI and LST and emphasize the critical role of green spaces in sustainable urban planning for Sivas.
