Abstract

In architectural conservation theory, contemporary additions to historic buildings are shaped around two main concepts: harmony and contrast. Although international regulations accept both approaches, how users perceive these interventions and how they affect the aesthetic experience remain controversial. This study aims to analyze how harmonious and contrasting architectural additions affect users' brainwaves. It also examines the concepts of aesthetic value and cognitive load within a cause-and-effect framework. This research adopted an experimental methodology using Electroencephalography (EEG). This high-resolution neuroimaging technique allows us to monitor cognitive processes through concrete data. The experimental study included 60 high-quality images of contemporary additions from around the world, selected based on expert opinions. These images were shown to 20 voluntary participants while their neural signals were recorded from 11 different channels on the scalp. The collected data were standardized, and the differences between the groups were statistically verified using a Paired Sample t-Test. The analyses revealed that in all 11 channels, the matching condition produced a higher P300 peak amplitude compared to the contrasting condition. After Bonferroni correction, the channels where this difference was statistically significant were identified as C4 (p = 0.004, d = 0.724), P3 (p = 0.003, d = 0.771), and P4 (p = 0.004, d = 0.725). The findings show that designs with harmony create visual fluidity. This fluidity leads to a higher amplitude and positive orientation in a specific brainwave potential (P300). On the other hand, contrast-oriented designs create visual complexity and perceptual friction, which results in lower amplitude and negatively oriented values. These results transform the abstract and subjective nature of architectural perception into concrete neurophysiological data. Consequently, this study provides designers with evidence-based neuroaesthetic cues before implementation. By bridging the gap between architecture and neuroscience, this research proposes an objective evaluation model for future design processes.
