Abstract

The Selimiye Complex, a masterpiece of Mimar Sinan’s mature period, is one of the most significant examples of Ottoman classical architecture and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. As an integral part of the complex, the Selimiye Arasta stands out with its traditional construction techniques, distinctive spatial scheme, and its position within the urban fabric. However, observations on the structure, restitution traces, and terrestrial laser-scanning data reveal that the arasta was not completed in a single phase but in at least two distinct construction periods. This study aims to document the construction stages of the Selimiye Arasta through archival documents, restitution projects and reports, as well as high-precision terrestrial laser-scanning data. The findings support the argument that the eastern row of shops was built during the period of Mimar Sinan, together with the complex itself, while the southwestern row of shops and the prayer dome were added later by Mimar Davud Ağa. The study emphasizes the importance of documenting restitution traces in historical buildings for understanding architectural chronology, identifying phase transitions, and ensuring the preservation of authentic architectural values.
