Abstract
The modernization process produced not only political and institutional transformations but also significant changes in the ways individuals perceived, presented, and rendered themselves visible. In Ottoman-Turkish novels, the modern subject was often constructed through clothing, the body, consumption habits, language, public visibility, and the social gaze. This study examined the continuity between the desire for visibility in Tanzimat and Servet-i Fünun novels and contemporary social media culture. The main objective of the study was to demonstrate that the experience of modernization in the Ottoman-Turkish novel was not limited to debates on Westernization, but also involved the construction of a performative self. In this context, characters such as Felâtun Bey, Bihruz Bey, Bihter, Firdevs Hanım and Ahmet Cemil were evaluated in terms of their desire to be seen, admired, distinguished, and valued under the gaze of others. It was determined that these characters experienced modernization largely through physical appearance, consumption practices, and social approval. Similar dynamics of visibility were also observed to be reproduced within contemporary digital culture. It was concluded that profile culture, selfie aesthetics, the follower economy, and the pressure to remain constantly visible intensified the performative structure of the modern subject. The study employed Erving Goffman’s approach to the presentation of self and Guy Debord’s concept of the society of the spectacle as its theoretical framework. As a result, it was argued that the visibility-centered construction of the modern subject in Tanzimat and Servet-i Fünun novels has continued to exist in contemporary digital culture through new instruments and new forms of representation.
