Abstract
This study examines the function of space in Hulki Aktunç’s debut novel Bir Çağ Yangını through Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space, Mikhail Bakhtin’s threshold chronotope, and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia. These three theoretical frameworks are employed not in parallel but in a complementary manner: Lefebvre explains how the novel’s central space, the Lozan Palas, is produced as a social practice; Bakhtin identifies the moment of crisis at which this production emerges; and Foucault illuminates how that crisis becomes institutionalized on the spatial plane. The Lozan Palas functions as a heterotopia of deviation -one that gathers individuals who diverge from social norms, freezes contradictory temporal layers within a single space, and fulfills nearly all six of Foucault’s defining principles. The differentiated relationships that the characters maintain with this space- Nisa’s confinement within, Ömer’s suspension on the threshold, Nuh’s positioning outside — reveal the mansion as simultaneously a point of rupture and a site of transformation. The novel’s non-human narrator, the threshold djinn, stands at the intersection of Bakhtin’s threshold chronotope and Foucault’s heterotopia, giving simultaneous voice to temporal fractures and spatial contradictions. The study’s central argument is that the stableman Nuh’s act of setting the mansion ablaze does not constitute resistance to modernization, but rather a tragic paradox in which the very destruction that modernization desires is carried out by its own guardian. In this light, Bir Çağ Yangını is regarded as one of the singular works of Turkish modernist literature, owing to the way it operates -both theoretically and aesthetically- as a novel of thresholds.
Özet
Bu çalışma, Hulki Aktunç’un ilk romanı Bir Çağ Yangını’nda mekânın işlevini Henri Lefebvre’in mekânsal üretim kuramı, Mihail Bakhtin’in eşik kronotopu ve Michel Foucault’nun heterotopya kavramı aracılığıyla incelemektedir.
