Abstract

Recent shocks in the European region, such as European Debt Crisis and Brexit process, have affected not only the volatility of that region but also the volatility of other markets with strong links to the Europe, such as Turkey. The success of portfolio diversification and risk management strategies of international investors depends on their ability to accurately analyze the spillover effects of financial shocks in the markets. In this context, study aims to identify the volatility spillovers between Turkish and European markets. For this purpose, the volatility spillovers between the Turkish stock market and the stock markets of 25 European countries are first analyzed using Hafner and Herwartz (2006) causality in variance test and then Fourier causality in variance test. The study reveals that there are bidirectional volatility spillovers between Turkish and European stock markets in general, contrary to the studies in the literature refers. Another important finding is that the volatility spillovers from the European stock market to the Turkish stock market are permanent, while the volatility spillovers from the Turkish stock market to the European stock market are temporary in general. The results provide important information to both investors and decision makers specifically for Turkish and European markets.
