Abstract

John Rawls’s work on the theory of justice has sparked significant debate and interpretation, both within liberal political theory specifically and in contemporary political theory more generally. Rawls argues that the fundamental principles of justice can be formulated within a framework of reasonable consensus, without relying on a comprehensive worldview or beliefs, adopting a deontological approach. Rawls also emphasises that a reasonable consensus on justice can be developed within modern societies where pluralism is irreversibly entrenched. This study aims to develop a number of questions and criticisms regarding Rawls’s intellectual project, drawing on alternative political traditions within contemporary political theory. It does not claim to completely reject or refute Rawls’s theory. Whilst agreeing with Rawls’s starting point and his attempt to integrate the liberal political tradition with social liberalism, it also aims to highlight certain impasses and problems within his theory. In doing so, the political conceptualization of Chantal Mouffe, one of the leading figures in contemporary political theory, is drawn upon. Starting from the concept of the political, the limitations of the political foundations of Rawls’s claim that a final consensus can be reached around the idea of justice, his operation within a sharp public-private distinction, and the claim that a final consensus on political values is possible are discussed. By opening up a discussion of the normative foundations of justice theory through the concept of the political centered on antagonism and hegemony, this study seeks to contribute to the relevant literature from the perspective of critical political theory.
