Abstract

This study examines the mediating role of career awareness in the effect of career day events, organized as career counseling and guidance activities at universities, on career stress. Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory, the study proposes that individuals transform environmental learning experiences (career day events) into emotional and psychological outcomes (career stress) through cognitive evaluations (career awareness). To test this theoretical framework, data collected from 578 university students were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that career day events increase career awareness and that career awareness reduces career stress, thereby playing a partial mediating role in this relationship. Furthermore, career day events were found to have a positive effect on career stress in the short term; however, this effect weakened and became negative as career awareness increased. In this context, career day events can enhance students’ knowledge about their careers while making their future expectations and responsibilities more visible. Over time, increased career awareness enables students to evaluate their career options more consciously and manage their career stress more effectively. These results demonstrate that the relationships proposed in the research model were largely confirmed and strongly support the theoretical expectations. Thus, the study makes important contributions to the career development literature while providing practical implications for improving career counseling and guidance activities conducted at universities.
