Abstract

Culture, understood as a mode of intervention in the natural world, has historically undergone complex, intensive cycles, shaped by diverse influences alongside the convoluted impacts of modernity, globalization, and technology. Previously, such exposure was never attributable to non-human actors. Now, artificial intelligence, technological systems, algorithms, and data—operating through the complex interplay of non-human actors which, though derived from human input, are not themselves human—seem to be eroding collective experience (an experience that is cumulative and typically conveyed in narrative forms), the narratives themselves, and the literary frameworks facilitating their creation. This study examines how artificial intelligence systems, by obstructing avenues of recognition more so than those of knowing, relate to experience and culture. The discussion will explore how the social and human sciences—including disciplines like cultural studies, social studies, and folklore studies—engage with artificial intelligence within this research framework, particularly an AI that operates beyond conscious awareness and functions as a significant driver of unconscious processes. Challenging the anthropocentric perspectives dominant in the social and human sciences, this paper argues that the distributed nature of knowing engenders a novel agent, one that emerges from the ongoing interaction between the body, the environment, and artificial intelligence. This claim is substantiated by examining the limitations of continuous learning and evolving AI. Specifically, AI's deficiency in the qualitative richness, emotional depth, contextual understanding, and conscious awareness—all hallmarks of human experience (the focus of social sciences and the study of humans as social beings)—is framed here as 'knowing without recognition/sagacious.' Within this context, the study underscores the critical importance of recognition over mere knowledge acquisition and investigates the evolving boundaries of this distinction in the AI era.
