Abstract

This research focuses on diet books that produce a variety of discourses about bodies, emotions, and lifestyles. Analyzing these produced discourses with the support of sociology literature and trying to make sense of them within a certain context constitutes the main problem of this research. For this reason, the research tries to analyze how bodily appearances and emotions that are not suitable for the market are excluded by means of diet books. From this point of view, a total of 4 diet books were included in the research and these books were analyzed by using the critical discourse analysis method. As a result of these analyzes, it has been concluded that the discourses produced try to be effective on people’s bodies, emotions, and lifestyles. Moralizing bodily appearance, emotions, and lifestyles is an important condition that makes this effect possible. This research is important in that it tries to contribute to the development of the concept of bio-morality produced by Alenka Zupančič and also aims to fill a gap in the body sociology literature.
