Abstract
Ottoman qadi registers are among the principal sources for the legal, administrative, economic, and social history of the Ottoman Empire. Although the tradition of judicial record-keeping dates back to the Umayyad period, no independent and systematic court registers from other Islamic states have survived. The earliest extant Ottoman qadi registers are preserved in the Bursa collection, with the Bursa register dated 860/1455-1456 being the oldest known example. As the earliest surviving independent collection of court registers in codex form in the Islamic world, the fifteenth-century Bursa registers are indispensable for understanding the formation of the Ottoman judicial record-keeping tradition. This study introduces and evaluates the complete corpus of the fifteenth-century Bursa qadi registers. Each register was systematically examined with respect to its date, presiding qadi and court clerk, number of folios and entries, and linguistic characteristics. The findings are analyzed within the framework of the institutionalization of Ottoman bureaucracy and judicial record-keeping, and the legal significance of these registers is discussed.
