Abstract

This study is a systematic literature review examining the effects of interventions and practices that promote sustainable consumption on university students. The study investigates sustainable consumption by considering the interaction between individual actions and structural factors within micro and macro dimensions. Campuses are strategic spaces where young people’s consumption habits can be shaped and sustainability education can be translated into action; therefore, it is important to systematically examine the effects of interventions implemented in this context. Within the scope of the research, the findings of 62 empirical studies published in international peer-reviewed journals between 2005 and 2025, selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, were evaluated using thematic analysis. The results indicate that campus-based practices promoting sustainable consumption can be grouped along two main axes: structural regulations at the macro level and individual practices involving student participation at the micro level. The findings highlight the importance of a “whole-campus” approach that integrates individual awareness with systemic change in fostering a sustainable consumption culture, and suggest that such campus-level transformations offer a model that can be applied to broader urban and societal systems.
