Abstract
The geographical region referred to by the Ottomans as Arz-ı Filistin (the Land of Palestine) encompassed numerous cities, most notably Jerusalem. This study examines the technical activities undertaken by Britain in the territory of Arz-ı Filistin, with particular emphasis on topographical surveying and mapping. It specifically considers the repetition of these mapping activities at a more advanced technical level and the attempts to integrate them with earlier surveys and cartographic studies. The British Government exerted significant effort in producing topographical maps in the Palestinian lands, and it is evident that additional motives lay beneath this interest. The study employs a qualitative research method widely used in the social sciences. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study examines the remapping and topographical surveying of geographical areas such as Arz-ı Filistin and Egypt. These activities are interpreted as part of the preparatory groundwork that subsequently facilitated the establishment of a Jewish state and the advancement of British interests in the region. At the same time, the marked increase in Jewish migration to Arz-ı Filistin from the second half of the nineteenth century onward suggests that broader plans concerning the region were already taking shape. By the late nineteenth century, efforts toward the establishment of a Jewish state within Ottoman territories had gained momentum. Against this historical background, the study explores how infrastructural and technical preparations involving detailed topographical surveys and mapping of the region were developed in the Middle East prior to the First World War. It further examines how these activities intersected with the developments that facilitated Britain’s growing presence in the region and the subsequent process leading to the establishment of a Jewish state.
XIX. Yüzyıl sonlarında Osmanlı Devleti’nde bir Yahudi Devleti kurulması çalışmaları hızlanmıştır. Ortadoğu’da Birinci Dünya Savaşı öncesinde araziyi haritalayarak topografik anlamda detaylandıracak alt yapı çalışmalarının nasıl şekillendirildiği ortaya konulmaktadır. İngiltere’nin bölgeye yerleşme ve Yahudi Devletinin kurulması sürecini hızlandıran gelişmelerin nasıl şekillendiği ortaya konulmuştur.
