Abstract
Mes’ûd bin Ahmed’s Süheyl and Nevbahār is one of the prominent literary figures of the fourteenth century, is an important romance and adventure narrative from the Old Anatolian Turkish period. This study analyzes the relationships of desire in the masnawi through the lens of René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire. It investigates how desire is structured through the interplay of subject, object, and mediator, and how direct encounters and rival figures shape the narrative. Based on qualitative textual analysis, the study classifies relationships of desire into three categories: foundational triangles of desire, relationships of desire initiated through direct encounters without an explicitly identifiable mediator, and competitive triangles of desire. Süheyl’s desire for Nevbahār emerges through the portrait created by a painter and the accompanying narrative. Nevbahār’s attraction to Süheyl is shaped by a dream, the nurse’s interpretation, Fağfūr’s account, and social praise. The desires of Sa’lūk and Kaytas originate in visual encounters with beauty. Nevbahār’s strategic discourse constructs a fictional triangle of desire that functions as a discursive sublayer of these relationships. Meanwhile, the desire of the merchant Cühūd is awakened by Kaytas’s attraction to Nevbahār, producing an explicit mimetic triangle in which the model becomes a rival. The judicial order in the city of Tūfān resolves the mimetic tensions generated by the proliferation of relationships of desire and socially legitimizes the union of Süheyl and Nevbahār through marriage. The findings demonstrate that desire in the mesnevi acquires a multilayered structure through representation, the gaze, discourse, mediation, and rivalry.
Özet
XIV. yüzyılın önde gelen isimlerinden Mes’ûd bin Ahmed’in Süheyl ü Nevbahâr mesnevisi, Eski Anadolu Türkçesi döneminin önemli aşk ve macera anlatılarından biridir. Bu çalışma, mesnevideki arzu ilişkilerini, René Girard’ın mimetik arzu kuramı bağlamında incelemektedir. Araştırmanın amacı, aşkın özne, nesne ve dolayımlayıcı/model ekseninde nasıl kurulduğunu; doğrudan karşılaşmayla başlayan arzuların ve rakip figürlerle gelişen mimetik ilişkilerin anlatıdaki işlevini belirlemektir. Nitel metin çözümlemesine dayanan incelemede arzu ilişkileri üç düzeyde sınıflandırılmıştır: kurucu arzu üçgenleri, doğrudan karşılaşmayla başlayan ve dolayımlayıcısı açıkça belirlenemeyen arzu ilişkileri ve rekabetçi arzu üçgeni. Süheyl’in Nevbahâr’a yönelen arzusu nakkaşın yaptığı tasvir ve anlatı aracılığıyla doğar.
