Abstract

When observing social stratification in cities, analyzing it solely through income inequality is insufficient. Access to services, the quality of services, and their locations are also important factors to consider when evaluating privileged groups. In this study, which aims to examine class division and its reproduction through spaces in Istanbul, ranked first in the latest provincial data (2025) of the Socio-Economic Development Ranking Research, services targeting upper income groups were selected. Other reasons for selecting Istanbul include the city's concentration of economic capital, the development of its service sector, and the abundance of consumption spaces compared to other provinces. Private hospitals, private schools, luxury chain gyms (MAC One, MAC Studio, Hillside City Club, John Reed, and Snap Fitness), and luxury supermarket chains (Macrocenter, Carrefour Gurme, Gourmet Garage) In this study, which analyzed the distribution across Istanbul's 39 districts by comparing it with the SEGE (2022) district survey, the SEGE scores for all districts in Turkey were re-leveled according to Istanbul province. Districts classified as D1 (highest) to D5 (lowest) based on their scores have enabled the association of luxury services and consumption spaces with districts. This comparison of urban spaces provides insights not only into the reproduction of economic capital but also into the reproduction of cultural and social capital. In this study, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of “distinction” forms the theoretical framework, suggesting that individuals living within the same city but accessing different services reinforce existing distinctions. The “luxury infrastructure network” identified through the analysis helps interpret consumption differences across districts based on class. The distribution of spaces examined alongside SEGE scores makes intra-urban inequalities visible through access to luxury spaces. In this regard, the study aims to offer a unique contribution to urban sociology and inequality literature by reading stratification through the lens of the city and to contribute to discussions on space-based inequalities.
