Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyse the effects of renewable energy, sustainable growth, and research and development (R&D) expenditures on environmental quality in G-7 countries in the period 1990-2022. Methodology: The study analyses the effects of renewable energy, sustainable growth, and R&D expenditures on environmental quality using the panel CS-ARDL method. Findings: DH cointegration test results confirm that there is a long-run cointegration relationship between carbon emissions and the variables analysed. The findings of the CS-ARDL analysis show that economic growth initially increases carbon emissions, but after a certain income level, this effect reverses and reduces emissions. This result supports the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for G-7 countries. Moreover, it is found that renewable energy consumption and R&D expenditures have a decreasing effect on carbon emissions. Originality: G-7 countries are in a leading position on a global scale in terms of both economic size and R&D investments. Analysing the environmental impacts of these countries with comprehensive and up-to-date data not only contributes to the academic literature but also has the potential to provide practical and applicable recommendations for policymakers. Therefore, this study aims to make an original contribution to the literature by analysing the relationships between renewable energy, sustainable growth, technology, and environmental quality in G-7 countries.
