Abstract

Celiac disease is a common, chronic autoimmune disease caused by the immune system in individuals sensitive to gluten-containing grains. Celiac disease affects approximately 0.5-1% of different populations. Celiac disease is thought to develop mainly due to genetic predisposition and environmental trigger gluten feeding. In susceptible individuals, a chronic inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa occurs as a result of gluten ingestion, with activation of T cells and release of stockins. This situation causes the destruction of the villi and causes the intestinal barrier to deteriorate and lose its function. As a result, there is a decrease in the absorption surface of the villi. Individuals with celiac disease must eat gluten-free throughout their lives. Nurses have an important role in coping with the disease, adapting to a gluten-free diet and managing the social effects of individuals diagnosed with celiac disease, which is a chronic disease. From the moment of diagnosis, nurses should plan and perform the individual-specific education on gluten-free nutrition, as well as evaluate the dietary compliance of individuals. In addition, nurses aim to increase the individual's compliance with the diet; should be in constant communication and cooperation with other health care teams, families, individuals and their relatives, non-governmental organizations, volunteers and celiac associations. Thus, it is thought that it will increase the awareness of the individual, family and society about celiac disease and its management and contribute to the management of the disease.
