Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of the "Social Media and Nursing" course on the social media-specific epistemological beliefs of nursing students, as well as their critical thinking motivation and tendencies. Methods: The population of this prospective research consisted of 93 first-year nursing students who took the "Social Media and Nursing" course in the spring term of the 2020 - 2021 academic year. The data of the study were collected as a result of four repeated measurements within the scope of the "Social Media and Nursing" course through the Critical Thinking Motivational Scale, California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory, and Social Media-Specific Epistemological Beliefs Scale. Results: It was determined that the students' epistemological beliefs specific to social media and critical thinking motivations were at a high level according to the four measurement results, while their critical thinking dispositions were at a low level. There was a significant positive correlation between the 1st and 4th measurements of social media-specific epistemological beliefs, critical thinking motivation, and critical thinking disposition. Conclusion: Considering the results, it is recommended that elective courses that will provide students with skills such as questioning information, accessing the source of information and choosing the right information, and critical thinking should be added to nursing education programs. Also, teaching methods that direct students to think and question should be used more in the courses.
