Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of gender, grade level, and parents’ educational attainment variables on teacher candidates’ critical thinking dispositions. Within this purpose, a meta-analysis was conducted for the studies conducted in Turkey on teacher candidates’ critical thinking. A total of 53 studies for gender, 28 for grade level, 13 for mothers’ educational attainment, and 15 for fathers’ educational attainment were included in the meta-analysis. Total sample size of the included studies was 20.682 for gender, 12.002 for grade-level, 7.087 for mothers’ and 7.148 for fathers’ educational attainment variables. The studies included in the meta-analysis were heterogeneous. Funnel plots, Orwin’s Fail-N Safe test, Duval and Tweedie’s Trim and Fill, and Egger’s regression coefficients indicated to an absence of a possible publication bias. Effect sizes were computed by the assumptions of random effects model. Cohen’s d coefficient was used in computing the effect sizes. According to the results of the study, gender, grade level, and parents’ educational attainment variables had a very low effect on teacher candidates’ critical thinking dispositions. As for the moderator analysis results, the variance among studies for study-type moderator was not significant in terms of gender, grade, and parents’ educational attainment variables. However, the variance among studies for region moderator was significant only in terms of gender variable.

Etki değeri hesaplamalarında Cohen’in d katsayısı kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, anne ve baba eğitim durumu değişkenleri öğretmen adaylarının eleştirel düşünme eğilimlerini çok düşük düzeyde etkilemektedir. Cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, anne ve baba eğitim durumunun eleştirel düşünme eğilimlerine etkisi yayın türü ara değişkenine göre farklılaşmamakta, araştırmanın yapıldığı bölge ara değişkenine göre yalnızca cinsiyet değişkeni açısından farklılaşmaktadır.
