Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between school burnout and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and psychological well-being among high school students. The research was conducted using a descriptive method based on a relational survey model. The research population consisted of high school students studying in two different provinces in the Marmara Region. The sample was determined using stratified sampling and consisted of 364 students randomly selected from different types of high schools. The study utilized the Student Information Form, the Social and Emotional Learning Scale, the Stirling Scale for Emotional and Psychological Well-being for Children, and the School Burnout Scale. According to the research findings, there are significant and negative correlations between school burnout and social-emotional learning (SEL) variables. Self-management skills show a low-to-moderate negative correlation with the sub-dimensions of school burnout, and a low-level negative correlation with total school burnout. Relationship-building skills are associated with both the sub-dimensions and overall school burnout at a low level of negative significance. Responsible decision-making skills showed a low-level negative correlation with low personal achievement and total school burnout. Furthermore, well-being was found to have moderate and inversely significant correlations with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, low personal achievement, and total school burnout. Positive and moderately significant correlations were found between each of the sub-dimensions of the SDÖ (Student Well-being Inventory) and students' well-being. Furthermore, while social and emotional learning skills (SELL) have a negative predictive effect on school burnout, they have a positive predictive effect on well-being. Based on the research results, recommendations have been made regarding educational policies and practices aimed at reducing school burnout and improving social and emotional learning skills.
