Abstract

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of technological progress on unemployment in Turkey. The study consists of annual data for the period 1990-2021 for Turkey and time series analysis was used. In the study, the effect of technological progress on unemployment was estimated with four different models. In these models, unemployment rate as dependent variable, real gross domestic product as control variable, R&D expenditures, number of researchers, patent and communication computer etc. as independent variable representing technological progress. (percentage of service exports) variables were used. In order to determine the relationship between the variables, the Johansen Cointegration Test was used and those that were cointegrated were analyzed with the Error Correction Model (VECM) for long-term analysis, and those without cointegration were analyzed by the least squares method with short-term estimation. According to the empirical analysis results, there is long-run causality from real gross domestic product and patent applications to unemployment. Communication computer etc. (percentage of service exports) does not affect unemployment in the long run. The number of researchers and R&D expenditures do not affect unemployment in the short run.
