Abstract

In designing equipment needed by students for sitting and standing up in higher education buildings, the information related to students reach and grasp distances eliminates the unnecessary use of muscles and by doing so creates pleasant and functional work and study environments. In addition, defective design of chairs and desks may cause breathing difficulties and generate health problems in internal body parts. Design problems which may cause health problems in students can be overcome by determining anthropometric measures of the potential users of those equipments. The objective of this study is to determine the anthropometric measures to be used for designing equipment needed in various faculties and vocational schools in Pamukkale University in Denizli. For this purpose, a total of296 male and female students, in the summer semester in Pamukkale University's faculties and vocational schools, were studied. A total of 14 anthropometric measures were taken seven of which were related to sitting position and the other seven to standing up position. Measures were taken using Harpenden type anthropometer and measures related to sitting position were gathered using adjustable sitting equipment. The descriptive and percentile values for anthropometric measures were determined and several suggestions for the design process were presented.
