Abstract

The development differences between both developed and developing countries gradually increased especially after the 19th century. Innovation is shown as the most important reason of these development differences Technological developments are extremely important for the economic growth and development goals of the countries. Also, the technological developments are directly proportional to patent expenditures. In this study, the ratio of exports to gross domestic product was used as the dependent variable. The number of patent applications of residents and the number of patent applications by non-residents was received as independent variable. All data were taken from the World Bank database. The study covers annual data for the period of 1984-2017. As a result of the findings obtained, it has been observed that there is a one-way causality relationship at the level of 5% significance towards the patent applications of residents from the share of exports in the ratio of domestic product.
