Abstract

The aim of the research is to determine the opinions of lower secondary school teachers regarding the in-class supervision process carried out by the education supervisors or the school principals. The study was designed as a phenomenological study, one of the qualitative research methods. In this context, the study focuses on how teachers experience and understand the concept of in-class supervision. Criterion sampling, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used to determine the study group. The sample of the study consists of a total of 12 teachers who work in different branches in public lower secondary schools in Alanya district of Antalya province, and experienced at least one in-class supervision. During the data collection process, face-to-face interviews were conducted with the participants. All of the interviews were held in the participants’ schools in the Spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. Inductive content analysis and descriptive analysis techniques were used in the analysis of the data. As a result, it can be said that teachers desire a process-oriented, constructive, humanitarian, democratic, objective and rule-based supervision that develops teachers in their profession. The majority of the teachers perceive in-class supervision applications as a worrying, unintentional and bureaucratic process; some of them perceive it as useful; some of them perceive it as useless; and some of them perceive it as a control-based process. It has been understood from perspectives of participant teachers that the in-class supervision process in the schools does not have any positive effects on students. What is more, we found that it has some negative effects such as the deterioration of the natural class climate and the increase in the anxiety of the students. In this sense, it is important to use the guidance-oriented educational supervision approaches that try to improve in-class learning and teaching processes by focusing the professional development of the teachers in the educational supervision system. Thus, teachers' perspective on the educational supervision system can be made positive and their belief in supervision can be increased, which assures in-class supervision can be made more effective.
