Abstract
This study evaluates the debates on horse domestication through a comparative analysis of archaeological animal remains and biological data obtained from the Dereivka and Botai settlements. The aim of the study is to reinterpret the stage of the domestication process represented by the Botai and Dereivka horses in light of material evidence and genetic data, and to offer a critical contribution to the debate. The results were obtained through the comparative examination and evaluation of previous studies conducted on this field. The presence of intensive horse hunting at Dereivka in the early period has led the region to be interpreted as an important center, an deven, according to some researchers, as the main homeland of the Kurgan Culture. The Kurgan Culture is at the forefront of studies concerning the origins of the proto-Indo-Europeans. Accordingly, the spread of the Indo-Europeans across certain regions identified as Urheimat has been attempted to be explained through a scientific linguistic approach. Morever, as a result of this spread, the development of the Indo-European language has been associated with the Kurgan Hypothesis. Thus, this hypothesis and the centers at its core have come to the forefront with concepts such as burial traditions and horse riding. In this respect, the position of Dereivka is of importance. Botai, on the other hand, possesses significant evidence noy only concerning riding and domestication. The results indicate that, contrary to the claim that the development and spread of the proto-Indo-Europeans took place through domesticated horses centered on Dereivka, there is stronger evidence at Botai regarding the domestication process. The importance of the Dereivka and Botai settlements lies in the fact that they highlight the earliest stages of horse domestication and played a determining role in human-horse relations, which occupy an important place in the shaping of human history.
