Abstract

In this study, the effects of the industrial production index and oil import on the current account balance are investigated with panel data analysis. The relations between these variables are examined for the European countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Finland and Greece during the 24 years between 1995-2018. According to the seemingly unrelated regression model results, an increase in the industrial production index in Germany, France, Fin-land and Poland affect the ratio of the current account to GDP positively, while the increase in the industrial production index in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece have a negative impact on the ratio of the current account to GDP. Germany, France, Finland and Poland, which have a high level of development in the industrial sector, sell their products in international markets. On the other hand, the increase in industrial production may occur with the import of oil and intermediate goods in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece, which have a relatively low level of industrial development
