Abstract

This study evaluates the relationship between the concepts of “forced migration and gender equality” within the framework of Amartya Sen's “capability approach.” The relevant literature has been subjected to a critical analysis. The analysis reveals that the “capability” approach combines poverty and fundamental human rights, and recognizes gender inequality as one of the most significant obstacles to development. Prioritizing security policies in managing international migration leads to the neglect of migrants' rights. Negative attitudes and reactions towards migrants cause the politicization of the migration phenomenon and the objectification of migrants. Immigrant women are marginalized in socio-economic life and do not have adequate access to services such as education and healthcare. The human development approach emphasizes the necessity of women’s participating more equally and more fairly in socio-economic fields. In this context, it is suggested that eliminating deprivations and guaranteeing fundamental human rights are necessary for achieving social and economic development. Furthermore, the necessity for “the state and society” to play a supportive role in strengthening human capacity is emphasized.
