Abstract

Although Symbolist painting is often considered a carrier of meaningful images, this view relegates the image’s direct affective response to a secondary role. However, Gilles Deleuze’s concepts of affect, image, emergence, difference, repetition, and sensation block make it possible to grasp the sensory effects in Arnold Böcklin’s works on death, nature, and myth beyond representation. Following Deleuze’s call to rethink the image through “affect” rather than representation, this study examines Symbolist visuality on a different level. Böcklin’s dreamlike figurations and spatial compositions draw the viewer into a static, silent, and timeless realm of tension rather than toward a specific narrative. The image ceases to be a representation carrying a fixed meaning and appears as temporary densities formed by the short-lived articulation of simulacra. The Symbolist image functions as a sign which, for Deleuze, conveys no fixed meaning but directs the subject to an affective experience. Based on a literature review, the research reveals that the Symbolist image establishes a multi-layered mechanism of influence grounded more in its power to evoke feeling than in representation, and that it multiplies perceptual experience on the plane of immanence. The study offers an original reading beyond approaches based on representation and meaning.
