Abstract

The concept of space in painting has historically played a decisive role in shaping the stylistic and period-specific characteristics of visual art. In pre-Enlightenment intellectual thought, space was regarded as an abstract, formless entityan external reality existing independently of human presence. This worldview is distinctly reflected in the spatial constructs of medieval painting. Notably, the "finite universe" models proposed by Aristotle and Plato laid the groundwork for a representation of space that was static, symbolic, and hierarchically ordered. However, from the 13th century onward, transformations in painting practices signaled a departure from this intuitive and anthropo-independent spatial perception. This shift enabled space to be reconceived not merely as a symbolic plane but as an extension suggesting physical reality. In the 14th century, the gradual dissolution of medieval traditions brought about profound changes in thematic expression, in the relationship between space and extension, and in the perception of representation and reality itself. The interaction between figures and space was no longer confined to flat, symbolic depiction. Artists increasingly situated objects and figures within coherent spatial environments, referencing the physicality of the real world. As a result, the systematic application of perspective principles gained prominence. From the 17th century onward, European painters began to employ diagonal and spiral linear compositions with growing frequency, thereby softening or disrupting the overt geometric structure of the picture plane. Thus, tracing the historical evolution of the spatial concept in painting offers a critical theoretical lens through which to examine human centered representation, the shifting dynamics of visual culture, and the intellectual underpinnings of Medieval and Early Renaissance art.
