Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this research is to determine levels of loneliness and hopelessness of cancer patients to metastasis status and examine the relationship between hopelessness and loneliness in terms of some variables. Method: Cross-sectional method was used in the research. Data collected on 15st December 2013 - 15st March 2014. 88 cancer patients, who are volunteer, participated in the study. Data collected at Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital. The data collected by three different data collection forms. These are the questionnaire compiled by researcher, “UCLA- Loneliness Scale” and “Beck Hopelessness Scale”. Data are analyzed statistically with SPSS 16.0 program. “T-test, one way analysis ANOVA , Kruskal-Wallish Test, regression analysis, Pearson product moment correlation” was used to analyze data. Finding: The mean scores of hopelessness and loneliness were 5,84 ± 4,38; and 37.51± 11.49 respectively. It was found that age, gender, education, family type, income, diagnosis, treatment period, marital status and metastasis status did not affect to hopelessness and loneliness scores of cancer patients. A statistically relationship existed between job of patients and score of hopelessness. It was observed that as loneliness scores of the patients increase, hopelessness increase. Conclusion: There is no significant influence between metastasis status of cancer patients and hopelessness scores and loneliness scores. In other words as loneliness scores of the patients increase, hopelessness scores increase as well. Contrary to general expectations, it was found that cancer patients did not feel loneliness and hopelessness
