Abstract

This study examined the relationship between depression levels and adverse childhood experiences among patients with diabetes. The sample consisted of 296 volunteer patients with diabetes aged 18–65 who were admitted to the internal medicine outpatient clinic of a public hospital. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory. The results of the regression analysis indicated that ACE scores had a statistically significant but quite limited effect on depression levels (R² = .088). A significant difference was found in Beck Depression Inventory scores by gender, and ACE scores differed according to the presence of comorbid disease. In addition, a statistically significant difference was observed in depression levels according to educational status. Examination of rank means showed that illiterate participants and those with primary school education had higher depression scores. The findings suggest that preventive interventions targeting adverse childhood experiences may contribute to reducing the risk of depression and chronic conditions such as diabetes in later life.
