Abstract

This study aims to highlight the role of the social work unit and the professional collaboration between social work and child psychiatry in patients admitted to a university hospital’s child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. This retrospective and descriptive study was conducted by reviewing medical records of 108 children who were referred to the social work unit between January 1, 2023, and June 1, 2025. Sociodemographic characteristics, psychiatric diagnoses, reasons for referral, and social work interventions were examined. Findings showed that the gender distribution of the patients was equal (n=54 females, n=54 males), and the most common psychiatric diagnosis was Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (36.1%). The primary reason for referral to the social work unit was suspicion of neglect and abuse (20.4%), followed by protective helath measure procedures (19.4%) and family related problems (16.7%). The most frequently implemented interventions by social workers included official reporting to the Provincial Directorate of Social Services (29.6%), family counseling and follow-up (25.0%), and monitoring of protective health measures (19.4%). These results indicate that social workers undertake not only supportive but also protective, preventive, and follow-up-oriented roles in child mental health services. In conclusion, social workers constitute an essential component of the multidisciplinary team in child and adolescent mental health services. They play a critical role in identifying and protecting at-risk children and supporting family functioning. Strengthening this collaboration is expected to enhance service effectiveness and contribute to the holistic well-being of children.
