Abstract

Distance visual acuity measurement is an important step of ophthalmologic examination and it is one of the parameters which is primarily evaluated during diagnosis, follow-up and tre¬atment of diseases. Basically visual acuity measurement is the determination of a threshold. Since this examination is a subjective test, it can be affected from several factors such as exami¬nation room conditions, technical features of chart, patient related factors, presentation type and duration of optotype. Because of the dramatic effect of visual acuity measurement on the decisi¬ons of physician, need for standardisation of charts, optotypes and examination conditions be¬come more important. Most of the usual visual acuity measurements of patients are performed with arithmetic progression charts, like Snellen and decimal charts. Because of the geometric progression of visual function; charts which have geometric progression of optotypes and certain other features are accepted to be more reliable for evaluating visual function of patients espe¬cially in clinical research. These charts generally have been called as logMAR charts; since they have been designed using the logarithm of "Minimum Angle of Resolution". These charts are also more objective for documentation of visual acuity levels less than 0.1 and statistical docu¬mentation of visual acuity data of clinical research is possible with logMAR scale.
