Abstract

This study deals with the level of knowledge and attitude of students regarding genetically modified organism (GMO) and the evaluation of sustainable consumption education. For these purposes, the questionnaire (The level of knowledge and attitudes towards GMO’s) produced by the researchers has been applied to 300 fourth-year students of Ondokuz Mayıs University who have been selected randomly. The data has been analyzed by a computer statistics program, SPSS. The analysis of data has shown that the knowledge of the majority of the students regarding the GMO is in accordance with the reality. However, they have negative attitudes towards the dimensions of reliability, environmental effects, socio-economical effects and its inspection and towards the production and usage of GMO. In addition, the results have revealed that there is no significant impact of personal variable on the attitude toward GMO’s. At the end of the study, the level of knowledge and attitude of students have been evaluated according to the basic principles of sustainable consumption.

Özet

Bu çalışma, üniversite öğrencilerinin genetiği değiştirilmiş organizmalara (GDO)’lara yönelik bilgi düzeyi ve tutumlarının belirlenmesini ve sürdürülebilir tüketim eğitimi açısından değerlendirilmesini konu almaktadır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Samsun İl Merkezi’ndeki çeşitli fakültelerin son sınıfında öğrenim gören 300 kişilik öğrenci grubuna araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen “GDO’lara Yönelik Bilgi Düzeyi ve Tutum Ölçeği” uygulanmış ve toplanan veriler SPSS bilgisayar paket programında analiz edilerek bulgular yorumlanmıştır. Sonuçta, araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun GDO’ların üretimi, kullanımı, yaygınlığı ve olası sakıncaları hakkında gerçek duruma yakın şekilde bilgi sahibi oldukları; diğer yandan “güvenirliği”, “çevresel etkileri”, “sosyo-ekonomik etkileri” ve “yönetilebilirliği” açılarından sözkonusu ürünlerin üretimi ve kullanımına karşı tutum içinde oldukları ortaya konulmuştur. Ayrıca, araştırmaya katılanların GDO’lara yönelik tutumlarının kişisel özelliklerine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılık göstermediği belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda ise, araştırmaya katılanların GDO’lara yönelik bilgi düzeyleri ve tutumları, sürdürülebilir tüketim eğitiminin temel ilkeleri açısından irdelenmiştir.
