Abstract

Objective: To investigate contraceptive use, to determine choice of ontraceptive methods in different age groups and to figure out the effect of education on contraceptive choices at our family planning clinic. Materials and Methods: Medical charts of 14349 patients who attended to Sisli Etfal Training and Research Hospital Family Planning Clinic between January 1997 and December 2002 were reviewed. Results: The incidence of contraceptive use was 82.2% (78.2% of women were using some type of modern method and 3.9% a traditional method). Intrauterine device was the most commonly preferred method (56.1%) in all age groups. Use of hormonal contraceptive methods (combined oral contraceptive pill, depot-progesterone and monthly injection) significantly decreased after 40 years of age. Among adolescents (14-19 years), condom use was very low (%1.1); however, after age 25, its incidence increased to %10. As women were better educated, the incidence of coitus interruptus and intrauterine device use decreased while use of pill and condom increased (p
