Abstract

In the first census carried out in the Ottoman Empire in 1830-1831, the names of the peoplewho were registered in the books (م (were put under the names of the people who wereenlisted in order to determine the population that could be enlisted. In the study, it isexplained that this letter was used in the Ottoman Empire for other purposes in differenttypes of documents before the population books, and that the history of the use of mim toindicate people extends to the older periods. In addition, it can be said that the letter continued to be used in the population books for a while after the first count. However, itis understood that the use of mim after 1835 was used to point to other things rather thanspecifying the population to be enlisted, as in the first count. It also states that other lettersand special signs called caize are used to mark people other than the mim in the populationbooks.
