Abstract

We emphazied the importance of evaluation with bo ne mineral density in diagnosing the rahitis that is caused by the treatment of antiepileptics. 8.1 ± 1.9 years old aged 35 children using phenobarbital, valproic acid and carbamazepine (14.5 ± 5.4 months with the diagnose of idiopathic epilepsy) were compared with 29 patients (7.4 ± 1.7 years old ages) as control group, according to serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alcalen phosphatese, bone age and bone den sitometric values. The levels of calcium and alcalen phosphatese were found significantly different between the two groups, there was no significant difference between phosphorus, magnesium and bone age values. The bone densitometries of patients and control groups were significantly different. There was a negative correlation between the bone mineral density and the duration of antiepileptic administation, especially as if it was longer than 12 months. The metabolism of the patients using carbamazepine are less effected than the ones using phenobarbital and valproate.
