Abstract

In this study data of the patients with hip fracture diagnosis operated at Bülent Ecevit University, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology between 2006-2010 were analyzed to determine the factors affecting mortality and morbidity. Data of the patients were obtained from patients’ charts and computer records. Health condition of the patients were questioned one year after the surgery by phone calls. We analysed patients’ age, sex, ASA score, location of the fracture, anesthesia technique, hospitalization time before operation, operation period, hospitalization time after operation, situation of blood replacement, surgical technique, number of consultations, levels of hemoglobine, albumine, lymphocyte count, adherent disease, smoking status and complications before discharge from hospital. Presence of hypertension, chronic obstructive lung disease, and chronic renal failure were found to be important factors affecting mortality and morbidity. High ASA score was determined to be an important factor indicating the risk of mortality and morbidity. One year mortality rates were high in ASA 3 and ASA 4 groups. There was no significant difference between general and regional anesthesia techniques in the sense of mortality and morbidity rates. When the types of the operation were compared, mortality rates were higher in prothesis group than those of intramedullary nailing. Although blood parameters like hemoglobine and albumine showed no effect on mortality and morbidity, preoperatively lower lymphocyte levels were associated with mortality within one year. In conclusion, we found out that anesthesia technique did not directly affect the mortality and morbidity in patients operated for hip fracture in our study, but comorbidities, higher age, higher ASA scores and technique of operation were found to be effective factors on mortality
